According to the results published by @Xeno Panther On Twitter, Microsoft is considering pushing Windows 11 with recommended content. We’ve already recommended Apps and Files in the Start menu. Now prepare to view the suggested files in File Explorer.

The Folder Options window from Windows 11 with the Suggested Files option highlighted.

Digging for the latest versions of the shell32.dll.mui and propsys.dll.mui files revealed a new feature in the Folder Options window. There is a new checkbox in the Privacy section on the General tab called “Show Recommended Content”. @Phantom of the Earth Reports spotting related speed features (IDs that you can enable using the ViveTool app), but they are forcibly disabled in the latest Windows 11 Dev build.

As of now, there is no additional information about this feature, so how it will work is anyone’s guess. It can display files and folders, or Microsoft can use it as another way to push ads. The company is no stranger to displaying banners in File Explorer (remember OneDrive ads?), and the new option could continue that. Fortunately, users will (allegedly) have the option to disable suggested content in File Explorer. Finally, we don’t know if Microsoft plans to announce it in future Windows 11 preview updates.

The idea of Windows 11 suggesting random files every time you open File Explorer seems odd, so we can’t wait for Microsoft to announce and explain the feature.

In case you missed it, Microsoft recently rolled out one of the worst Start Menu changes ever. Microsoft considered implementing a website. Advertisements recommendations in the start menu but later decided to scrap the idea. Windows 11 creates 25272 removed websites, leaving only recommended files and apps in the Start menu.

How about seeing file recommendations in File Explorer? Do you think this is a good idea? Let us know in the comments.
