The latest Windows 11 preview build has some new widgets, a questionable change to the Start menu, and a long list of various fixes. However, the most interesting changes are hidden deep within the OS and require some tinkering to uncover. As seen from the ever-giving source of hidden Windows features, @Phantom of the EarthWindows 11 build 25290 finally delivers a much-needed improvement to File Explorer.
Microsoft is working on major File Explorer upgrades, and part of those upgrades is making tabs more usable and less crippling. Until now, File Explorer suffered from poor performance and missing features, such as dragging a tab to create a new window or moving a tab across windows. Users running Windows 11 build 25290 can now turn on the feature ID responsible for dragging tabs and creating new File Explorer windows.
Build 25290 includes a neat new hidden feature that lets you drag a tab out of one window in File Explorer to open it in your own new window!

caution: Undeclared features are often crude, unstable, or borderline unusable, and the ability to move tabs from one window to a new one will prove that. It is very small, so backup important data before proceeding with ViveTool app. Remember that using a stable Windows 11 is the best way to ensure that your system remains as bug-free as possible.
How to Enable Tabs Drag and Drop in Windows 11 Build 25290?
- Download ViveTool. From GitHub And unzip the files into a convenient and easily searchable folder.
- press Win + X and select terminal (admin).
- Switch to a Windows terminal with a command prompt profile. Ctrl+Shift+2 Shortcut or by clicking the arrow button at the top of the window.
- Go to the folder containing the ViveTool files with CD command. For example, if you placed ViveTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive.
- Kind of vivetool /enable /id:39661369 And press enter.
- Restart your computer.
You can disable it by changing the ID. /active with /unfunctional In the command in step 5. You may have to do this sometime because the updated File Explorer is smaller and doesn’t support moving tabs between existing windows (just dragging them). Perhaps, the best idea is to wait for Microsoft to provide a more polished experience in the upcoming Windows 11 preview build.
