Twitter CEO Elon Musk ran a poll on Sunday night asking the public if he should step down as head of Twitter. After several hours, the results finally came in: the users wanted him to resign from his post.
The poll, which closed at 6 a.m. on Monday, recorded more than 17 million votes. Of those, about 58 percent said “yes” to Elon stepping down as head of Twitter, while about 42 percent wanted Musk to stay on.
Musk has yet to confirm the poll results. however, Internet entrepreneur Kim.com wants the poll redone., as there are reportedly “100k ‘analysts’ with 30-40 accounts” all voting against the CEO. He also said that He hopes Musk used the poll as a honeypot to “catch all the deep state bots.” To which Chief Tweet replied, “Interesting”. What’s more, in a tweet suggesting that only Blue subscribers should be the only ones who can vote in policy-related polls, Musk responded. “Good thing. Twitter will change that.”
It is not yet known whether he will abide by the results of the original poll or redo it with only blue subscribers voting. But even if Musk steps down, he will still own the microblogging platform. He will still be able to choose who will succeed him and what decisions the company will make in the future.
Since he took over the microblogging platform again in late October 2022, Musk has been surrounded by various controversies. For one, he fired several top executives and laid off half of Twitter’s workforce. He then asked the rest of the staff to commit to a “very strict” tweet or be cut with pay, leading to many more employees leaving the company. Moreover, Musk improved Twitter’s Blue service to give regular users the ability to have a blue checkmark. However, it was delayed several times as some users took advantage of their checkmarks to impersonate companies and public figures. Twitter recently suspended the accounts of several journalists for allegedly sharing private information about Musk’s whereabouts.
Eventually, Twitter banned linking to rival social media sites such as Facebook, Truth Social, and Mastodon. After much criticism from users, Musk relented and said that only accounts whose primary purpose was to promote their competitors would be suspended.
