Sega’s mascot went through several iterations during the early stages of its life. Sonic the Hedgehog could have ended up as a rabbit or even a human like Mario, but his concept design was finalized as we know it today by former designer Naoto Ohshima.
However, just a few days ago, Naoto Ohshima got his hands on possibly one of the first Sonic sketches we’ve ever seen, and they revealed a human version of him. On Twitter, Sonic Artist unveiled concept art of a game called Twin Stars, which was internally canceled. The tweet also includes some early sonic concepts.
I made a draft of the game. An action game about twin brothers who save the dream world from the Nightman World boss “Thirteen”. It evolved into Sonic.

Concept art shows two different iterations of the human voice. One character is depicted as a young human boy with spiky blue hair, and the other has similar features except for spiky red hair. The concept art is almost reminiscent of Mario and Luigi in a way. Perhaps the design was intended to compete directly with Nintendo.
The rest of the concept art features a menacing face with sharp teeth and an equally sharp nose covering half the sky. Other enemies include moving cannons, angry trees, and the like. Furthermore, there is also an initial repetition of a loop in the background of the art, and the green mountainous area of the landscape appears.
Half a decade ago, the former designer Share the news About the human voice in an interview; Unfortunately, no concept art reportedly existed to preserve the hedgehog’s first humanoid design. Naoto finally stumbles through some of his earlier tasks, and we get to see a different version of Sonic.
I developed the first design proposal for Sonic after three years in the design department. Although it wasn’t Sonic then – the main character was a human boy.
I remember the thought coming to me as I was going to sleep, and I was afraid I wouldn’t remember it in the morning. So I quickly drew it in the notebook and then fell asleep,” Noto Ohshima noted in the interview.
Sonic the Hedgehog isn’t the only character who was completely different in his debut. The featured villain in the franchise, Eggman, was initially developed as a main character.
It’s always fun to see how far one of our favorite gaming mascots has evolved since its early days. Its latest game, Sonic Frontiers, has proven to be a much better experience than some of its recent offerings. We can see the franchise moving towards higher horizons with subsequent games in the future.
While we await future Sonic experiences, recent observations on the job listing suggest that the upcoming game will be developed in Unreal Engine 4.
