  • Microsoft’s prominent canceled IP, Scalebound, was being developed by Platinum Games and was slated for release in 2017 before it was ultimately canceled.
  • Recent rumors suggest that Platinum Games is working with Xbox to bring back the discontinued title, as explained by Shpitkal Nick on the XboxEra Podcast.
  • It is not known whether Scalebound’s development will use scrap or start entirely from scratch. The expected entry is in the very early stages, and it could take “ages” before the game sees the light of day.
  • We suggest taking rumors with a grain of salt. Neither Microsoft nor Platinum Games have officially confirmed the development of Scalebound.

Scalebound was a highly anticipated Microsoft game that was slated for release nearly half a decade ago, but was shelved due to complications faced by Platinum Games. The action RPG developed in Unreal Engine 4 was based on a fantasy setting where a dragon helps the protagonist in an action-packed adventure.

Since its cancellation, rumors of its revival have persisted in the gaming community for years, but now it seems more likely than ever to be resurrected. Acknowledged insider, Special Nick, appeared. XboxEra Podcast, where he claimed that Microsoft and Platinum Games are in early talks to revive the canceled Scalebound project.

During the podcast, Nick reiterated the latest rumors he heard from sources regarding Scalebound, noting that Platinum Games is finally relaunching it. Nick explained, “I am told that platinum [Games] Working with Xbox to bring back Scalebound. They would like to bring it back.

He reportedly heard the rumor from two different sources. The new rumor may cause mild anticipation in the community, but details about the popular canceled IP are still scarce.

For example, insiders aren’t sure how Platinum Games will tackle the Scalebound project again. Whether it uses old leftover materials and assets in any way or starts completely anew remains to be answered.

Nick explained, “I I don’t know if they’re going to try and put the pieces together, I don’t know if they’re going to start from scratch I have no idea.Additionally, details surrounding the game engine are scarce. Scalebound may use the same Unreal Engine 4, but there is no solid evidence for or against it.

Additionally, the well-known insider has also made it clear that the new Scalebound project won’t turn into a playable game for a long time.

The main reason for Scalebound’s cancellation was Platinum Games’ inexperience with Unreal Engine 4. Additionally, Scalebound was too exciting for the studio at the time. The gameplay revealed before its cancellation gave us glimpses of the poor optimization and graphical inconsistencies that plagued the title.

However, Platinum Games has gained more experience and has expressed a keen interest in pursuing Microsoft’s canceled IP several times over the past few years. Kamiya noted (translated by VGC),We’ve worked on it a lot, and there’s no point in keeping the Microsoft game in its current form, so we’d like to do something about it (laughs). Phil! Let’s do it together!
