Is AI on the verge of consciousness? AMCS’s open letter calls for action.

A head has interpreted words related to consciousness.

The Association for Mathematical Consciousness Science (AMCS) has written an open letter calling on big tech and other institutions to accelerate research in cognitive science. The call is made given the rapid growth of ChatGPT, Bard, Bing Chat, and other generative AIs.

AMCS is not the first organization to write an open letter with AI concerns. Just this week, the Microsoft-backed BSA called for federal laws and guidelines on AI, and in March, more than a thousand signatories, including Elon Musk, asked all AI labs to stop AI training.

According to AMCS, it’s not such a wild thought that AI will soon reach “advanced brain architecture and functionality.” That would put him somewhere in our moral landscape that would raise ethical, legal and political concerns, he said. As such, it wants to ensure that society understands the implications of achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Outlining a possible way forward, AMCS says cognitive research is crucial to understanding AI. He said society and the scientific community need to take his concerns seriously. He hopes his letter will accelerate research into consciousness so we can better understand AI and ensure positive outcomes for humanity.
